Tour Itinerary
Distance & Habitat

Kilema Gate to Horombo Hut: 16 km | Montane Forest
-
Horombo Hut to Kilema Camp (Descent): 7 km | Moorland
Tour Overview
Your adventure begins with a 45-minute transfer to Marangu Gate, passing through the scenic Marangu village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at the park office, all hikers must complete registration before proceeding to Kilema Gate (1,950m)—the starting point of your cycling journey.
Once at Kilema Gate, you’ll do a final check of your mountain bike and daypack, ensuring you have essentials like drinking water, a packed lunch, and extra clothing. Accompanied by your guide—also on a bike—you’ll start the 16 km ride to Horombo Hut (3,705m) along a 4x4 track. Cyclists with good fitness levels and solid mountain biking skills may be able to ride the entire route, depending on road conditions.
Since gradual acclimatization is key to preventing altitude sickness, regular stops will be made to allow your body to adjust to the increasing elevation. The goal is to reach Horombo Hut by 15:00.
After a short rest at Horombo Hut, you'll begin the 7 km downhill descent to Kilema Camp, dropping 800m in altitude. The track consists of loose rocks, so controlling your speed and avoiding unnecessary risks is crucial.
Upon arrival at Kilema Camp, your porters will have your tent set up. In the evening, you'll receive a warm bowl of washing water, and your cook will prepare dinner before you settle in for the night. Keep in mind that night temperatures here can drop to freezing—so be prepared for a chilly night under the stars.

Distance: 7 km
-
Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, ensure your duffel bag is packed before setting off on your ride from Kilema Camp to Horombo Hut. The steep trail features loose rocks in certain areas, requiring careful navigation.
Horombo Hut is a lively mountain outpost perched on a small plateau, capable of accommodating up to 120 climbers. It’s a bustling hub where ascending and descending trekkers, guides, and porters converge, creating an atmosphere of adventure and camaraderie.
You will arrive just in time for a late lunch at Horombo Hut. After lunch, collect your bike for a 1.5-hour acclimatization ride to Zebra Rocks (4,040m) and back.
Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at Horombo Hut, where you can rest and prepare for the next leg of your journey
-
Distance: 9.6 km up | 9.6 km down
-
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After an early breakfast, meet your guide and begin your ascent into the alpine desert zone. The first 3 km of the trail is extremely rocky, making cycling difficult. You’ll need to push and carry your bike over some rough sections before reaching a more rideable path.
Once on the Saddle, the vast, open landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks, the terrain flattens out, allowing for smoother cycling. However, the high altitude, reduced oxygen levels, and cold temperatures make the 7 km ride to Kibo Hut physically demanding.
The final kilometer before reaching Kibo Hut (4,703m) is particularly tough, requiring patience and frequent breaks to hydrate and maintain a steady pace. Upon arrival, lunch will be served, giving you time to rest before the thrilling descent.
Epic Downhill Ride to Horombo Hut
After lunch, prepare for an adrenaline-pumping mountain bike descent, dropping nearly 800m over 7 km. The final 3 km leading back to Horombo Hut is technical and challenging, requiring careful control and steady navigation over loose rocks and uneven terrain.
End the day with dinner and an overnight stay at Horombo Hut, recovering for the next adventure ahead.
-
Distance: Approximately 9.6 km
-
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Start the day with an early wake-up call and ensure your duffel bags are packed. After breakfast, meet your guide and begin the ride back up to Kibo Hut. As before, the first 3 km will be tough, requiring you to push and carry your bike, while the final 7 km offers a smoother cycling path.
Upon arrival at Kibo Hut (4,703m), enjoy lunch and take time to rest and acclimate. At around 16:00, depending on how you're feeling, you may opt for a short hike up the summit path to get a sense of the terrain for your midnight summit attempt.
Kibo Hut, set in the barren alpine desert, is a stone-built shelter with bunk beds for 60 climbers. There are no water sources nearby, and the only toilets are located behind the hut.
Summit Night Preparation
The final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is just 1,195m up, and you'll begin the ascent later that night. Spend the evening preparing your gear, including:
✅ Thermal clothing for extreme cold
✅ Fresh batteries for your headlamp and camera
✅ A spare set of batteries
✅ A thermal flask for your water to prevent freezing
At 19:00, try to get as much rest as possible, as you'll be waking up at 22:00 for the ultimate challenge—the Kilimanjaro summit bid!
Kibo Hut (4,730m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Kibo Hut (4,730m)
-
Cycling Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 3-4 hours descent
-
Distance: 5.4 km ascent, 31 km descent
-
Habitat: Arctic
At 22:00, wake up for a quick tea and biscuit break before setting off into the challenging summit push. The initial section follows a rocky path to Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m), offering a brief resting point. The route then zigzags up to Gillman’s Point (5,681m), with the steepest and most grueling section being the "Jamaica Rocks," requiring significant physical and mental endurance.
From Horombo Hut to Gillman’s Point, cycling is not possible, so you'll need to push your bike up to Jamaica Rocks. For the final ascent to Gillman’s Point, you will need to carry your bike (or arrange for a porter to assist). With oxygen levels at just 9.5%, this is the toughest part of the climb.
Once at Gillman’s Point, the path becomes more manageable, and cycling resumes. Expect snow-covered trails leading up to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Strong and experienced mountain bikers can cycle most of the trail from Gillman’s to Uhuru, depending on snow conditions.
After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Kibo Hut for a late breakfast and prepare your gear for the next leg of the journey.
Kibo Hut (4,730m) → Kilema Gate (1,950m)
-
Distance: 25 km
-
Elevation Loss: ~3,000m
-
Cycling Time: 3 hours
Get ready for the ultimate downhill mountain biking adventure! From Kibo Hut (4,730m), descend 3,000 meters over 31 km in just 3 hours—an exhilarating, fast-paced ride through changing landscapes.
Arriving at Kilema Gate (1,950m) marks the end of this incredible cycling expedition on Africa’s tallest mountain!
