Tour Itinerary

You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or from Arusha and transferred to your hotel in Moshi, located at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your guide who will provide a briefing about your upcoming tour. Together, you’ll go through a bike fitting session to ensure everything is set up for your ride. For those arriving in the morning, you’ll have ample time to go for a short warm-up ride through Moshi town, getting a feel for the local surroundings before your adventure begins.

Lake Challa, a hidden gem nestled on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Located just 55km from Moshi, this remote caldera lake is a serene haven surrounded by stunning nature. It’s an ideal destination to relax and recharge, whether you choose to explore the area through various hikes, kayak across borders, or simply soak in the panoramic vistas of untouched Africa.

In the morning, you'll be picked up from your accommodation and cycle to Lake Challa Safari Camp, accompanied by a support van with a driver and cook. As you ride through the scenic villages of Mabogini, Kahe, Miwaleni, Hilili, and Challa, you’ll stop after 25 km for a short break with fresh fruits, followed by a bush hot lunch around 10 km later.

Upon arrival at Lake Challa, you’ll be greeted by the breathtaking views of the private game reserve overlooking the crater lake. Your guide will lead you on an exploration through the riverbed, dry river, and the large dried crater, ultimately guiding you down to the lake itself. Spend the day kayaking or taking in the natural beauty of the green landscapes, while also enjoying the opportunity to interact with local people as they go about their daily activities. The area is home to various wildlife, including velvet monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species, offering you the chance to witness nature at its best.

Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Marangu, a small town at the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, steeped in ancient traditions and vibrant heritage. This tour offers an exciting blend of action, tradition, and culinary exploration as you delve into the life of the Chagga tribe, the unique rainforest landscape, and the local coffee-growing practices.

In the morning, you’ll begin your bike ride to Marangu Gate (1900m), the starting point for all Kilimanjaro treks via the Marangu Route. (Option: If preferred, you can opt to place the bikes in the van at Marangu Mtoni and drive to the gate or continue cycling up to the gate.) At Marangu Gate, you’ll be able to take in stunning views of the mighty Kilimanjaro and absorb the spirit of the mountain. Marangu is home to the local Chagga people, and you’ll learn all about their history, traditions, and way of life on this immersive day tour.

Your first stop will be a visit to a small coffee farm, where you’ll gain insight into the entire coffee process—how it’s grown, harvested, and processed locally. You’ll even have the chance to get involved in processing, roasting, and preparing a fresh cup of coffee. After your coffee break, the adventure continues with a visit to the Chagga Underground Caves and the Chagga Live Museum. These caves were historically used by the Chagga people to protect themselves from the Maasai, who migrated to the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro during times of drought. Here, your guide will recount the dramatic history of the conflict while you explore the caves.

Next, we’ll head to the Ndoro Waterfalls, where you’ll enjoy a scenic hike through lush green landscapes to the base of the waterfall. The descent takes about 30 minutes, and you’ll have time to relax and take a refreshing dip in the pool at the base of the waterfall.

Finally, we’ll visit the Chagga Live Museum, an outdoor museum that offers further insight into traditional Chagga life. Here, you’ll be treated to a traditional hot meal, and you’ll have the opportunity to sample local spirits such as banana beer and wine, rounding out this full cultural experience.
