3-Day Pedal via West Kilimanjaro

Tour Overview

Cycle to Your New Comfort Zone: “The Hidden Gem”

The West Kilimanjaro plains, nestled in northern Tanzania, offer an incredible combination of Maasai community lands and Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). This stunning region is blanketed with acacia woodlands and open plains that not only support a rich diversity of wildlife but also offer breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll encounter a variety of animals including wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, and baboons. During certain times of the year, you may even spot elephants as the area lies on a crucial elephant corridor linking Amboseli National Park in Kenya and Kilimanjaro.

The West Kilimanjaro region is the homeland of the nomadic Maasai people, who live in harmony with the surrounding wildlife. Known as “Maasai Land,” this area is perfect for adventurous travelers seeking a unique, off-the-beaten-path experience that blends culture, wildlife, walking, and cycling.

Path: Off-road & paved roads
Highlights: Scenic landscapes, Maasai culture, wildlife encounters, and cycling adventure.

Tour Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Simba Farm, where your bike tour will begin. The day starts with a downhill ride through the farm as you head towards the main rough road. We’ll cycle along the main road, passing through Ngare Nairobi village, and continue along the border of the Ndarakwai Conservancy towards the West Kilimanjaro airstrip. From there, we’ll follow the dirt road to TingaTinga village, where we’ll conclude the ride at the Olpopongi Maasai Village.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a vibrant traditional Maasai dance. Afterward, you can enjoy lunch and settle into your Maasai-hut style rooms. In the evening, experience a fascinating Maasai cultural tour before ending your day with a delicious dinner around the bonfire.

We will start our cycling adventure early this morning, heading south towards Ngabobo Village. The early start allows us to cover a good distance before the sun becomes too intense. Today’s ride takes us through dry, arid open grasslands, offering a stark contrast to the lush, green slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro that we left behind. The morning ride offers great opportunities to spot wildlife, including wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, and elephants.

The route today is shorter but more challenging due to the terrain and weather conditions. The final stretch will be a gradual ascent on a gravel road as we approach the Ngabobo Village. Our cycling journey will conclude at the Osiligilai Maasai Lodge, where we will spend the night, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

Today’s route takes us into a new vegetation zone as we leave the arid landscapes behind and head towards the lush, greener slopes of Mt. Meru. The ride will be a gentle ascent along gravel roads, leading us to Momella in Arusha National Park. Along the way, we’ll pass streams of water flowing down from Mt. Meru and cycle through the vibrant village of NgareNanyuki, a lively small village that marks our approach towards Arusha National Park.

As we get closer to the park, we may be lucky enough to spot giraffes grazing along the route. Once we reach the park entrance gate, we’ll complete the necessary paperwork and hop into a car for a short game drive around the park, taking in the sights of the beautiful Momella lakes. After the game drive, we’ll return to the main gate, collect our bikes, and continue our ride towards the Ngongongare gate, marking the end of our cycling for today.

After resting at the gate, we will be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, completing another incredible day on this adventure.

These inclusions and exclusions provide a comprehensive overview of what’s covered and what’s not in a safari package.
