Journey from the Lush South to the Arid West

Today's ride takes you from the lush, green southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to the drier, more rugged western plains. You’ll start by cycling through fertile coffee and banana plantations, experiencing the rich agricultural lands of the Chagga people. As you move westward, the landscape transforms into open plains and acacia woodlands, home to a diverse array of wildlife and offering breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro.

The western plains are part of the renowned Maasai Lands, where the nomadic Maasai people live in harmony with the surrounding wildlife. Your route will include a mix of dirt and tarmac roads, culminating in an overnight stay at Tinga Tinga village, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture.

Exploring Enduimet Wildlife Management Area

Today's ride takes you through the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, one of Tanzania’s hidden gems. Bordering Amboseli National Park, this area is a vital migratory route for wildlife, including the majestic African elephants. While the Maasai people primarily inhabit this region, it’s also home to diverse tribes such as the Chagga, Meru, and Pare people.

Starting on wide open plains dotted with acacia trees, the landscape gradually transforms as you approach the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, where fertile land supports extensive cultivation. Your cycling adventure concludes at Simba Farm, perched above vast wheat and barley fields, offering panoramic views of the western Kilimanjaro plains.

Cycling Towards the Rongai Route at Nalemoru Village

Today’s ride takes you to the northeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, heading towards Nalemoru village, located near the Kenyan border. This village marks the starting point of the Rongai route up Kilimanjaro. As you cycle through beautiful open farmlands, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the western Kilimanjaro plains. Along the way, you'll pass through vibrant towns, gradually ascending the foothills of the mountain towards the Rongai forest.

Your day’s ride will conclude at Snowcap Cottages, nestled on the edge of the Rongai forest. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Downhill Ride to Lake Chala: A Hidden Gem

Today, you’ll enjoy a thrilling downhill ride towards the stunning Lake Chala, a crater lake nestled right on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. Known as one of Tanzania’s hidden gems, Lake Chala is fed entirely by underground springs from Mount Kilimanjaro. The lake’s turquoise blue and green waters are surrounded by a rich variety of plants, trees, and wildlife, creating a peaceful and picturesque atmosphere.

Your camp for the night is located on the edge of this mystical caldera lake, offering dramatic volcanic views. This serene setting provides the perfect opportunity to unwind and soak in the tranquility of the area, allowing you to truly connect with nature.

Challenging Ride to Marangu Village with a Waterfall Detour

Today’s ride will be short but challenging as you cycle up to Marangu village, nestled in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Along the way, you’ll pass lush banana and coffee plantations, and be greeted by the friendly Chagga people, who will wave and shout “Jambo!” as you pedal by.

Before reaching your camp, you’ll take a detour to the iconic Ndoro Waterfalls, where you can stretch your legs and take a short walk down to the base of the falls. Here, a local Chagga guide will share the history of the area, including the ancient Chagga caves, the people’s traditions and customs, and the mystical legend surrounding the waterfalls.

After a refreshing stop, you’ll complete the last downhill stretch of your ride towards your camp or hotel for the night.

Final Ride and Celebration in Moshi

On your last day of cycling, you'll navigate the villages and plantations on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The first half of the ride will involve several steep ascents and descents, followed by a more leisurely downhill journey towards the lively Moshi Town. As you cycle through the suburbs and outskirts of Moshi on scenic back roads, you’ll make your way to the Park View Hotel, marking the end of your incredible 6-day cycling adventure around Mount Kilimanjaro.
